hello?
Seems this site is still getting traffic - so I felt compelled to post. Hopefully it’s not just spammers looking to post replies to my comments.
Things have changed dramatically since the closing of the station last October;
1. I tried to podcast (Music DVD Geek) but threw in the towel when I was spending more time attempting to get permissions from labels to use snipets of audio from DVDs. I’m proud of the handul of eps that I completed, but when you try to hold down a real job and do something cool at the same - something cool quickly becomes something inconvenient.
In March we went to Austin TX for a wedding and at the same time saw an incredible film at SXSW Interactive called Before The Music Dies. Go see if its near you or buy it on DVD later this year - GREAT STUFF INDEED:http://beforethemusicdies.com
2 I quit my job - Gave notice back in April. After nearly 20 years with the same company, the time had come to work with new people and take on new challenges. I have no regrets and I believe I left on good terms. If you’re 40 or less and you’ve been doing the same thing for the past 15-20 years - change. NOW.
In May we went to Jamaica (Beaches in Ocho Rios) for another wedding (there was actually a third in Chicago in April as well!). Aside from a good friend blowing her knee out while climbing Duns River Falls, the trip was mostly fun.
3. We’ve moved. Yes, we’ve sold the house where we use to broadcast from “a bonus room over the garage” and we now are living in Connecticut. But this Summer has been an adventure! We’ve found a new home in Durham CT - giving us similar surroundings to WI - but there is no bonus room, so don’t hold your breath on an 80sAirwaves resurrection. We will not be closing on that house until next month so all of our “stuff” is in storage back in WI. Living in a furnished townhouse near the beach off Long Island Sound is fun, especially during the summer, but after awhile you begin to miss some of your stuff.
4. Aimee crashed. Leaving a McDonalds in Richmond, IL, Aimee went out the in and met a lady in a hurry to make a turn arrow. Both came out fine, but Aimee’s VW cabrio took ALL the impact. It was totaled and now she’s sportin’ a new Jetta that she’s very happy with. She’s sportin’ some scars on her arm as well, but that’s all that’s left from the event. There is an amazing line from a Poi Dog Pondering song that says “You should wear with pride the scars on your skin. They’re a map of the adventures and the places you’ve been.” Amen.
5. During a life-changing moment prior to the move, I sold off my entire vinyl collection - 2,200+ albums. It was sad, indeed. Much of my adolesence was bound to some of that collection, but the thought of moving it again or having it all melt down in a hot storage unit somewhere got the better of me. Plus the $4K should come in handy for something or other. I still have a library of CDs, books and music vids that will hopefully find there way safely to the new home.
6. As you can imagine, I can’t move to CT without a job - we sold our house in Elkhorn for $205K and the new home was $100K+ over that. The new position is really ideal for what I had been doing and what I’m capable of leading. Meeting new people and learning new systems has really been both exciting and humbling. I am excited about all the prospects and opportunities this new company will provide. Our biggest client was just listed as #4 in Inc. magazines Top 500 privately held companies. Edible Arrangements also shares office space with us so I occasionally score a chocolate covered strawberry or some tasty pineapple! Life is good.
7. Living within the tri-state area means that we have easy access to Manhattan (90 min away) and Boston (2 hrs) and Cape Cod (3 hrs). We are digging this and enjoying all that these areas have to offer. Later this morning we will be going to a Wood Boat Show in Newport RI. There is also a cool community radio station nearby that might need a host for an 80’s retro show…
=)
Take care!
