Our Final Day - So Long for Now
Today is the last broadcast day for 80s Airwaves. It’s been nearly 18 months since we launched and we’ve learned a lot in that time. Read my blog posts from earlier in the month for gory details on what went wrong. If I had to boil it down to one word, it would be marketing. Regardless of whether you’re trying to get your business into the public awareness, sell your home or get a new job, so many things boil down to being able to market to just the right person or persons. My presumption was that a cool radio station would market itself, word-of-mouth, person to person. So either I didn’t have a cool radio station or there are just too many other cool things for people to discuss. Either way, I didn’t come into this with a lot of money to invest in marketing and I didn’t actually come with as much time as I thought I would have, so the business aspect of marketing the station is what failed. I enjoyed having the station and providing the opportunity for many to hear what the 80’s actually sounded like and hopefully we changed a few negative opinions on 80s music. Mostly I appreciate so many who became loyal listeners, day in and day out. That is really the ultimate compliment for us. Maybe, someday in the future, we may put 80s Airwaves back on the air again, but for now it’s on to other things. Aimee and I will stay in touch with those of you on the Transmitter email list to let you know what other adventures await us.
SAYING GOODBYE: Today we’ve turned off the normal station format rules: Aimee and I will be playing our favorite songs, trying to get to all your requests and then at 8PM is Hal’s final Friday Night Fantasy Concert (with a seriously scary Halloween theme - more details below). After Hal’s show Aimee and I will play a little more than an hour’s worth of sign-off, so long, catch ya later songs. If you would like to be a part of this final hour, be sure and call this service to record your goodbye message: tell us who you are (first name only) and where you’re from and we will air them tonight during our last hour on the air: 206-666-5599. At Midnight (CST) tonight we will raise a glass, play our last specially selected song and then shut the 80s Airwaves broadcast server down. Though I think I would like to put out one more issue of the Transmitter - maybe just to publish some of the great emails we’ve received during the last three weeks.
We truly appreciate Dr. Hal and Martin Hennessy for contributing to our little station - thank you gentlemen! We sincerely thank those who actually listened while we were here. You made a dream come true.
Stay in touch.

The Friday Night Fantasy Concert for Oct. 21st is a special Halloween show as part of the countdown to the midnight sign-off: among the musical goodies are a John Peel session by BILL NELSON, a Thriller-era MICHAEL JACKSON concert, and from the crypt some live H.P. LOVECRAFT topped off with THE CRAMPS performing a Halloween show at the Peppermint Lounge in 1983!
