Mix Tape Mondays ?

I have been absorbing Thurston Moore’s newest book,Mix Tape, over the past month or two. It is a serious review of the mix tape as an art form during the 80’s and 90’s. Today, to paraphrase from the book, mix tapes have morphed into playlists, though not nearly as personal or long lasting. And the personal aspects of the tapes is really what Mr. Moore tries to bring out; why did we create these? The book is full of stories about tapes from a wide variety of folk. When I first started getting into music and I made tapes for my friends, we would refer to them as shit tapes, mostly because they contained all sorts of different shit. Most of them had titles like Summer Shit ‘87 or Book of Shit ‘88. Hockey Trip Shit Vol. 3.

Well, I’m very certain that most of our loyal listeners probably have a stash of mix tapes in their basement, just like me. My goal is to get you to break out those old shit tapes and let’s get them on the air! Ideally, your tapes will be from the 1989 or before. If you are capable of ripping you cassette into mp3’s, that would be ideal as well. Our entire music library is at 192K stereo. If you aren’t capable but you still want to share, drop me a line at feedback @ 80sairwaves .com . I’m not going to become your tape rip bitch, but I will help out where I can. If you’ve got artwork for the tape, scan and sent it so we can post it up on our website when we air your tape!

Starting in September, we’ll take the mix tapes submitted and starting at 1PM on every Monday we’ll play your mix tapes in their entireity. Should be cool! Our mailing address is below as well, but hopefully we can work out something so you can just transfer us your mp3 rips of your tapes: side1.mp3 and side2.mp3. We look forward to hearing your shit!
